Obituary for James Bruce White Sr.

James Bruce White Sr.
James Bruce White, Sr. went home to Heaven to join his wife Cheryl on 12/16/17.
Bruce was born 10/22/45 in Springfield, KY, and moved to Louisville as a young boy. As a young man, Bruce trained as a boxer and appeared on Tomorrow’s Champions. He graduated from Male High School in 1963 where he met his future wife, Cheryl. They were married for 49 years. Bruce also served as a Staff Sergeant in the 138th FA (National Guard). He was employed by American Commercial Barge Lines for over 25 years, rising to the company’s Assistant VP in claims.
Bruce was a lifelong and passionate supporter of University of Kentucky athletics. He had a remarkable ability to recall very specific plays from games that took place long ago. For years, Bruce made it a tradition to turn down the TV and turn up Cawood Ledford on the radio for the play by play. Friends often joked about how long it would take in a conversation with Bruce for the topic of UK basketball to arise – and it never took very long. While an ardent supporter of UK, he always properly respected the opponent. One of Bruce’s favorite sayings before a big game was ‘it’s time to toss the ball in the air and see what happens!’. On the day that he passed, Kentucky defeated Virginia Tech in a fast paced, energizing game – just the sort of contest he enjoyed so much.
Bruce was easy to amuse and possessed a unique, slapstick sense of humor and was quick with an infectious laugh that filled a room. He was a music lover and enjoyed a wide range of styles from country to rock to Motown. He was also an action movie aficionado. Perhaps more than anything else, Bruce was a loving and caring husband, father, and grandfather, and he was a friend to all. Bruce placed a high personal emphasis on loyalty, integrity, and courage, and he embodied these attributes throughout his life.
Bruce leaves to cherish his memory a daughter (Allison) and son (Bruce Junior) and four granddaughters that he adored: Katie, Paige, Grace, and Julie, as well as a host of friends that will always remember him fondly. Bruce was preceded in death by his wife, Cheryl; two brothers (Donnie and Jack); and his mother and father (Evelyn and Harley).
Bruce requests that everyone wear their favorite UK attire for his visitation, Wednesday, Dec. 20th from 3-7 p.m. at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. His service will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, at the funeral home with burial to follow in Resthaven.
