Obituary for Thomas Burwell Bacon Sr.

Thomas  Burwell   Bacon  Sr.
Thomas Burwell Bacon Sr., 86, of Louisville, passed away Monday, April 10th at his home. He was a graduate of St. Xavier High School and a longtime member of Wildwood Country Club. He enjoyed playing golf since a young age, was captain of his high school team for 4 years, and competed in the National Junior Golf Tournament in 1948. He was a Duplicate Bridge Life Master, sharing the table with some of the best players in the world. He had a lifelong passion for horse racing as an owner and breeder. He could often be found on the backside of Churchill Downs enjoying the races. He was also a Kentucky Colonel. He retired after 33 years of service to Eastern Airlines as a Regional Manager, earning accolades including salesman of the year during his tenure.

Thomas was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Martha Jane Stengel Bacon; his parents, Burwell and Lillian Lorentz Bacon; his brother James; and his sister Rita Swenson.
He is survived by three sons, Thomas Jr. (Kimberly), John (Shannon), and Mark (Julia); three daughters, Judith Saunders (Jim), Jane Fichtner (Arthur), and Jill Renfro (Jim); seventeen grandchildren; and twenty-four great-grandchildren.

Funeral Mass for Mr. Bacon will be held on Tuesday, April 18th at 10:00 A.M. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church, 1020 East Burnett Ave., with burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Monday, April 17th, from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd.

While flowers are welcome, donations or other expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Xavier High School.
