Several years ago, Mike and I were paired at Mid Pines in the annual hickory event held there each November. We were having a great time. Then we reached the par three eleventh green. The pin was back right, and I thought that I had hit a pretty good shot, close to the pin. To my surprise, I rolled beyond the pin, and my ball took a sharp right hand turn, ending up in the bunker.
I climbed down into the bunker and took a swat at the ball with my niblic. The ball remained in the bunker. Swat number two, and three, and four remained in the bunker. Swat number six finally resulted in the ball landing on the green. Two putts later and I had scored an eight on the short par three hole.
Needless to say, I was not happy about this. I jumped into the cart that Mike and I shared. The ride to the next tee was a quiet one. Neither of us said a word. As we stepped out of the cart to reach for our drivers, Mike broke the silence when he said, "You know, I have never seen anyone who took five shots to gaet out of a bunker, and do it so calmly!"
The air was now clear and we continued to enjoy our round. Only Mike Just could come up with the right way to ease my tension.
You gotta love the guy! And I did.
