Obituary for Dr. R. John Sanders, Jr.
Roma John Sanders, Jr., MD, 86, passed away peacefully into the arms of God before daylight May 15, 2018 after a short, intense bout with cancer.
A native of Palm Beach County, Florida, his south Georgia kinfolk were a second home. After Lake Worth High School, he graduated from the University of Florida in pharmacy. He enlisted in the Army during the Korean conflict as a medic, and served in Texas.
At the University of Louisville in preparation for medical school, he met future wife Marilyn Miller (who was already studying medicine) at a Sunday School social. They married on June 16, 1957, and then moved to Florida, where he attended the University of Miami School of Medicine.
After residency in Indianapolis, they opened their practice in Owensboro, KY, he in general surgery, she in internal medicine. They practiced side by side for 34 years. Faithful short-term missionaries, they traveled the world annually for the Baptist Medical-Dental Fellowship, serving weeks at a time in Indonesia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Yemen, China, Djibouti, and Morocco. They retired to Louisville near their adult children in 2000.
A successful doctor, he took up painting in the 1970’s. With inspiration and hard work, he transitioned into avocation as a juried watercolor artist, and was welcomed into the Kentucky Watercolor Society. His paintings of Southern landscapes, churches, and their world travels adorn dozens of walls.
He is survived by wife Marilyn, three adult children and spouses, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
His funeral will be Friday, May 18, 2018 at 11 AM at Highland Baptist Church, 1101 Cherokee Road. Burial will follow at Cates Cemetery, Whitesville, KY.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5 - 8 PM at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. and on Friday from 10 - 11 AM at Highland Baptist Church.
