Obituary for Charles "Charlie" E. Bailey, Jr.

Bailey, Jr., Charles E. "Charlie",
88, passed away at The Altenheim on Sunday, February 04, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife of 62 years, Margie J. Bailey, the love of his life.
Charlie was a native of Louisville, and a graduate of Jeffersontown High School, class of 1948. He was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD in 1950.
Charlie was a retired Management Analyst for the old Naval Ordnance Station and the U.S. Naval Reserve as Chief Warrant Officer (CWO3), and was a cryptographer during his time in the Navy.
He was an amateur radio operator for over 60 years, receiving the ARRL Century Club Award (DXCC) in 2017. He became a free lance photographer after retiring from the government. He enjoyed meeting numerous celebrities during that time. He was personal photographer for Colonel Harland Sanders at KFC, and did photo work for the old First National Bank, Jack Guthrie Associates, among others. Photography was one of his life-long passions, and he received many awards for his photos. He was past President of the Louisville Photographic Society in the 1970's.
Music was a big part of his life, as well. He sang solos in his church choir, and was a member of the Naval Academy Glee Club choir. He played piano, guitar and loved classical music. For many years, he sang to the Altenheim residents at Christmas, while accompanied on piano by wife Margie.
He was a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the US Naval Academy Alumni Association, Navy Cryptologic Veterans Association, American Radio Relay League, Naval Reserve Association, Quarter Century Wireless Association, The US Navy Memorial, and long time board member of The Altenheim.
He was a member of Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Church.
Charlie's hobbies included working crossword puzzles and "ham radio", but most of all he loved spending time with his family. He was a devoted husband and father.
He is survived by a daughter, Jayne Griffes (Gordon), a cousin, Lucy Ricketts (Steve) of Lagrange, KY, a brother-in-law, Linus Senhen , niece Amanda Senhen (Beth) and nephew John Senhen, all of San Diego, CA., and granddog, Gus.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Altenheim for their loving care of him during the years he lived there. They were like family to him. Also, thanks go to his Hosparus team, for their support in making his final days comfortable and peaceful.
Funeral services will be at 1 PM on Friday, February 9 at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. with burial to follow at Resthaven Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 - 6 PM on Thursday at Highlands.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to The Altenheim, Hosparus, or your favorite charity.
