Obituary for Ethel Schardein (Dolan)

Ethel Schardein (Dolan)
Ethel Mae (Dolan) Schardein, 89, of Louisville, went to be with her Heavenly Father, Tuesday, January 16, 2018. She passed peacefully surrounded by her family while at Norton Brownsboro Hospital.

Ethel was born on February 17, 1928 in Louisville, KY to the late William and Ruby Dolan, Sr. She was the oldest of three children. Ethel graduated from Atherton Girl’s High School. After graduation in 1946, she went to work as an executive secretary at Durkee Famous Foods. She worked there until 1950 when she married the love of her life, Bernard M. Schardein, who worked at Commonwealth Life Insurance Co. as a sales manager. After marriage she was a homemaker and loving mother until she returned to work at the age of 50 as a secretary to the Dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Louisville. She retired at age 70.

Ethel loved the Lord, her Monday luncheon bible study and her Sunday school class at St. Matthews Baptist Church. Prior to attending St. Matthews Baptist Church, she was a member of Walnut Street Baptist and Jeffersontown Baptist Churches. She also loved reading, sewing, quilting, cooking, and watching U of L sports. But most of all, she enjoyed her family and friends. Everyone loved Ethel.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 55 years and brother, William Dolan, Jr.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Susan Rhodes (Michael); brother, Phillip Dolan (Sue); two grandchildren, Brian Rhodes (April) and Lauren Rhodes Lyons (Robert); three great-grandchildren, Jackson Rhodes, Lincoln Rhodes, and Lilly Lyons along with four nieces and one nephew. She will be missed every day.
Her funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 22, 2018 at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 12:00 – 8:00 p.m. Sunday at Highlands.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Matthews Baptist Church.

The family wishes to thank the nurses, Leslie, Caitlin, Debbie and Jamar on the fifth floor ICU at Norton Brownsboro Hospital for their compassion and excellent care.
