Alvina “Jean” Steuber, age 93, passed away on November 3, 2017. Jean was born on December 13, 1923 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was the oldest child of Josephine and Lawrence J. Steuber. Jean’s father died when she was only 10 years of age and her mother went to work to support the family. Jean became the primary caregiver to her two younger brothers and her baby sister whom was only a year old. Jean graduated from OLA (Our Lady of Angels High School) in Cincinnati, where she played four years of basketball. She was a member of the Cincinnati Marlins Swim Team, excelling in back stroke. Jean received a scholarship to the University of Cincinnati; unfortunately she could not accept the scholarship because she needed to work to help support her family.
Jean married Eugene “Gene” Hoffmann of Louisville, KY on October 8th 1951. Gene and Jean moved to Louisville with their five children in 1964. They joined St. Margaret Mary Catholic Parish, where she has been a parishioner for 54 years. Jean was a member of Hurstbourne Country Club and Queens Daughters. She helped her husband start the family business in 1979 and it was her idea to name the company AAPER Alcohol & Chemical Co. Jean had a wonderful competitive spirit! She loved sports, especially attending the U of L football and basketball games and the Cincinnati Bengals games. She enjoyed watching all sports including golf, tennis, and soccer and she never missed Monday Night Football!
Mom was a loving wife and mother. She had a kind heart, a quick wit and was always ready for a party or the next adventure! She is preceded in death by her husband, Gene Hoffmann; her mother and father, Josephine and Lawrence Steuber; her two brothers, Larry and Don Steuber; her step-dad, Joe Schreiber; and his son, Joe “Sonny” Schreiber.
Jean is survived by her five children, Ann and David Powell, Amy Jo and Rob Condo, Paul Hoffmann, Evan and Cyndi Hoffmann, and Ross and Gloria Hoffmann; her sisters, Mary Lou Carlson and Bea Reinersman; her brothers, Jack Schreiber, Tom “Fr. Larry” Schreiber, and Les Schreiber. The family would like to thank her longtime friends and caregivers, especially Wendy Bryant and Virginia Meneghetti and all the staff at Jefferson Place.
