Obituary for Phyllis Josephine Manning

MANNING, Phyllis Josephine Gadlage, born April 15, 1933 in the Germantown neighborhood of Louisville, passed away on October 27, 2017, surrounded by family.
Phyllis was baptized and then married to Thomas Joseph Manning at St. Agnes Catholic Church. She was a proud graduate of Presentation Academy. Later, Phyllis became an energetic participant at Southeast Christian Church and was involved in several study and fellowship groups. In recent years she completed a mission trip to Austria.
Phyllis lived a bold life and was active – and always fashionable – until days before her death. As a wife and mother, Phyllis was an unflinching advocate for her six children and greatly enjoyed the years she was able to stay at home with them. Later, she earned a nursing degree from Jefferson Community College and then a Bachelor’s degree from Spalding University. Phyllis loved her “second career” as a nurse, which she spent at St. Anthony Hospital and Veteran’s Hospital. After her retirement she continued to offer nursing care to the elderly religious sisters at the Marian Home.
In addition to her late husband, Phyllis is preceded in death by parents August Gadlage and Anna Mae Wirth, and brothers Kenneth Gadlage and Joseph Paul Gadlage. She is survived by sisters Nancy Gadlage Roth and Mary Ann Gadlage Weyhing; six children, Bridgett Reed (W. Earl Reed, III), Joseph Manning (Kay Bowser), Philip Manning (Sherry Hartford), Patrick Manning (Linda Shipley), Martin Manning (Linda Blevins), and Theresa Perkins (Mark Perkins); 11 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Public visitation will be held at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. on Monday, October 30 from 4-8 p.m. Private funeral and burial services will take place the following morning. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Hosparus.
