Obituary for Stewart Ryan Spalding

Stewart Ryan Spalding
Stewart Ryan Spalding, 37, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2017, surrounded by family and close friends. Stewart was the loving father of three daughters, Lillian, Lachlynn and Layton. He is survived by his daughters, devoted parents, Constance Cogan Spalding and Wallace H. Spalding, III, and siblings Cynthia Spalding Knapek (Mark), Christopher (Beth), Stephanie Spalding Bilbrey (Ryan), Shawn (Allison), and Sabrina. He predeceases his grandmother, Doris Cogan, 22 aunts and uncles, 32 cousins, four nephews, two nieces, and many extended family members.

A 2008 graduate of the Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Stewart joined his father in legal practice as a third generation attorney. He was a 2002 graduate from the University of Louisville where he earned dean’s list honors and was a member of the football program. While at UofL, Stewart was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, serving in several leadership roles. He was also a proud member of the Sigma Pi Alpha Honor Society. Stewart was a 1998 graduate of St. Xavier High School and is a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church.

A devoted father, brother, and son, Stewart’s determination knew no bounds. Be it on the field or caring for his cherished daughters, he worked tirelessly. Under his broad shoulders and mischievous grin, lived a deep sense of compassion. Stewart was a shining example of love to all who knew him and will be best remembered for his warm heart and charisma. As a loyal fan of UofL athletics and a director of the L-Club, Stewart frequented Cardinals football, basketball, and many other sporting events in support of his alma mater, most always with his three daughters. His girls were his singular purpose.

Stewart's funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. in Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Tues., October 10, 2017. A burial service will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will occur at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, on Sun., October 8, 2017 from 2 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 5 p.m., as well as October 9, from 4 to 8 p.m.

The Spalding family has established “The Stewart R. Spalding Children's Trust” for the benefit of his daughters. In lieu of flowers or similar gestures, expressions of sympathy may be addressed to the trust at 2950 Breckenridge Ln. #3, Louisville, KY 40220.
