Obituary for Lee Meriwether

Lee Meriwether, 88, passed away Friday September 22, 2017. Lee was born in Montgomery, Alabama on November 3rd 1928. He was the last of eight children born to Florence Park and Benjamin Early Meriwether. He graduated from Montgomery’s, St. Mary of Loretto Academy in June of 1947. After graduating he joined the Army and served in the Army Medical Corps. After completing his Army service he entered college and received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Jacksonville (Alabama) State University in 1952. After working two years as a materials engineer for the State of Alabama Highway Department he resigned and earned his M.A. in chemistry from George Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1955 he started his teaching career at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville where he taught chemistry and physics and served as Science Department Chairman for 18 years. While at MBA he took a one year appointment as a Fulbright Exchange Teacher to Lancing College, Sussex, England. Upon leaving MBA he joined the staff of St. Johns School in Houston, Texas where he taught chemistry and served as Science Department Chairman. He also served as Head of the Upper School for 10 years. In 1993 he resigned his position at St. Johns and moved to his wife’s hometown, Louisville, Ky, where he joined the faculty at Kentucky Country Day School as a chemistry teacher. Lee was preceded in death by his only child Matthew James Lee Meriwether and wife Connie Stengel Meriwether.
Visitation will be held 4-7pm, Tuesday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, followed by a brief ceremony. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Habitat for Humanity or KY Humane Society
