G. Randolph Schrodt, Sr. M.D., 89, was born April 20, 1928, the middle of seven children of John and Helen Schrodt. He returned to his Father on August 9, 2017, surrounded at home by his family and loved ones.

Raised in The Highlands, he graduated as valedictorian of his classes at St. Xavier High School (‘45), University of Notre Dame (‘49), and the University of Louisville School of Medicine (‘54). He married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth “Betty” Cusick, in 1953. Randy and Betty began raising their large family during his residency in pathology at UofL, and a tour of duty in the Army. Following a fellowship in electron microscopy at Sloan-Kettering/Memorial Hospital in New York, he returned to the University of Louisville School of Medicine, where he became Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pathology, and was honored as the first William M. Christopherson Chair of Pathology. Randy was the recipient of many awards for his teaching, research, and publications, including membership in the medical honor societies, Alpha Omega Alpha and Phi Kappa Phi. In 2011, he was inducted into the St. Xavier High School Alumni Hall of Honors. Upon his retirement from the Department of Pathology, his colleagues and students graciously gave him their own award as “Greatest Diagnostic Pathologist and Teacher in the Universe.” For nearly 40 years he taught medical students and residents in various specialties, having a major impact on the education of the medical community of Louisville. He was active with the Greater Louisville Medical Society, Kentucky Medical Association, and the American Medical Association, as well as many other prestigious pathology societies.
Those who knew Randy were touched by his kindness and generosity, intelligence and quick wit, and genuine love of his family and faith. He cherished people and good conversation.
Although almost always the smartest person in the room, he was humble, always grateful, and celebrated the accomplishments and successes of others. He was a true “gentle man.”
He was preceded in death by his beloved Betty 10 years ago, his son, Greg, as well as many close friends and other family members.

He is survived by his children, Randy Jr. (Chrissy), Barbara (Paul Gelhausen), Jerry (Laurie), Chris (Barbara), and Ron (Tammy), grandchildren Alex, Zach (Ashley), Emily, Daniel, Katie, Ian, Clare, Rachel, and Ashley Haury (Mark) and her children, Liam and Noah, as well as his great- granddaughter, Hudson. Randy will also be lovingly remembered by his siblings, Mary, Louise, and Tom, and close friends including Rosemarie Pierce, Bobby Cooper, David Spaulding, and Andrew Pennington. The family wishes to express special thanks to Fr. Joe Mitchell, and Chuck Webb, M.D. and his staff, for the exceptional spiritual and medical care they provided. We also appreciate the great support of Hosparus and Home Instead.

His funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 12, 2017 at St. Raphael the Archangel Church, 2141 Lancashire Avenue with burial in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd.
