Obituary for Marilyn McHugh Hohmann

Marilyn McHugh Hohmann, 84, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2017. She was born in Louisville to the late Dorothy Kaelin and William A. McHugh, Sr., on October 8, 1932. She was married to Alcuin Francis "Jack" Hohmann on June 6, 1953.

She was a graduate of Presentation Academy, and earned her undergraduate degrees in Education at Spalding and a Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Louisville.

She worked for Jefferson County Public Schools for 20 years as a science teacher, counselor, assistant principal, and, most notably, as principal of Fairdale High School for seven years.

She was a preeminent leader at both the state and national levels in advancing education reform. She was a member of the Commission to Restructure the American High School, an author of Breaking Ranks: Changing an American Institution, and using practical experiences gained from her leadership with Fairdale High School in the Coalition of Essential Schools.

Marilyn has been extensively recognized for her leadership in school reform. She was voted into the Kentucky Academic Hall of Fame and was the recipient of the following awards: The Campbell Soup Educator of the Year Award, the Presentation Academy Tower Award, Spalding University's Caritas Award, University of Louisville's Grawemeyer Award, and the Gheen's Institute for Innovation Pioneer Innovator Award.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, and sister, Dorothy Ray. She is survived by her children; Stephen (Mary Stephens), Sara York (Duke), Susan Klimchak (Alan), and Chris (Beth).

Marilyn is also survived by her seven grandchildren; Alexander (Laurie), Christopher, Katie, Erica, Meredith Carter (Jon), Nick (Kristen), Ashley, and two great grandchildren; Reagan and Camden.

She is also survived by her siblings; Thomas McHugh, Sara Hastings (Bob), and William McHugh (Kathleen).

Her funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 21, 2017 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1920 Newburg Rd. with burial in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd.
