Shirley Ann Allen, age 81, passed away peacefully on Wednesday July 12, 2017. She was born October 8, 1936 in Louisville and was a graduate of DuPont Manual High School and Western Kentucky University. Shirley married Bill Allen in 1964 and they enjoyed 53 years together.
Devoted to children and education, Shirley spent over 35 years as an elementary school teacher at Schaffner and Norton Elementary Schools. She had a passion for volunteering and would frequently give her time to support the Hospital Hospitality House and St. Matthews United Methodist Church. She enjoyed using her talents to create banners for the church, and in retirement spent many hours sewing and quilting with her friends there.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; her son, Michael (Lara) and three grandchildren, Charley, Caleb and Hadley Allen of Palm Harbor, Florida and a sister, Wanda Martin (A. D.) of Indianapolis. She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph O. and Mary Miller.
Her funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 17, 2017 at St. Matthews United Methodist Church, 319 Browns Lane with burial in Resthaven Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. Sunday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. and from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Monday at St. Matthews United Methodist Church.
