Obituary for Hewitt T. Wilkinson

Hewitt T.  Wilkinson
Hewitt T. Wilkinson, 89, of Louisville, passed away Monday, April 3, 2017. He was a graduate of Louisville Male High School and the University of Louisville, where he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in education and administration. While at the University of Louisville, he lettered in track and was elected “Mr. Thoroughbred.” He was a former teacher and assistant principal at Western Junior High School; and a retired administrator of educational school programs for institutionalized children and youth/ He was honored by the Kentucky Cabinet for Human Resources for developing Jefferson County Public School classrooms housed in State Institutions for delinquent and handicapped children, by proclaiming a “Hewitt T. Wilkinson Day” on July 21, 1976, at the Kentucky Children Home Campus. He was a recipient of the 1992-WLKY Bell Award; a member of the Advisory Board of Directors of Plymouth Community Center and Hazelwood Hospital Foster Grandparents Program; a member of the University of Louisville; Delta Upsilon Fraternity; the Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association, Kentucky Retired Teachers Association and the Kentucky Association of School Administrators; the Louisville Male High School Alumni Association; the Louisville Area Daylily Society; and Broadway Baptist Church.
He was a United States Marine Corps Veteran of World War II: member of the American Legion Dixie Post #0220; Masonic Compass Lodge #223, F&AM; and a Kentucky Colonel.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Lanman Wilkinson; his daughter, Jennifer Wilkinson-Gudgel and husband, Boyd; his three sons: Hewitt “Chip” Wilkinson; William H. Wilkinson and wife, Nancy; and John M. Wilkinson; sister-in-law Rhoda Lanman; brother-in-law David Lanman; fourteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren also survive.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to his care-givers, Donna, Tina, Becky, and Andi; and Hosparus of Louisville for their loving care.
Funeral services will be conducted at his church, Broadway Baptist, 4000 Brownsboro Road, on Monday, April 10th at 11am with burial to follow in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be on Sunday, April 9th from 4-8 pm at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. Louisville, KY 40205.
