Obituary for Richard L. Johnson

Richard L. Johnson
Richard L. Johnson was born in Bangor, Maine on June 25, 1938, and died peacefully on March 10, 2017. He was raised in Westchester County, New York and graduated from Hastings-on-Hudson High School. Growing up, he spent every summer at his beloved Cold Stream Pond in Maine. Dick, as he was called, left New York to attend Purdue University, receiving a BS in Business. In 1961, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina.

His first job after college and the Marines, with Inland Container Corp., took him to Chicago. There, he met Julia Thomas, and they married in 1963. In 1968, the family moved to Louisville, and Dick joined the advertising department of Brown & Williamson. Dick spent the next twelve years as brand manager for Kool and Viceroy cigarettes.

In 1980, Dick and his wife Julie formed their own company, Venture Resource Business Brokers. The company assisted in the purchase and sale of privately held companies. By Dick’s retirement, their company had sold in excess of nine hundred businesses.

Dick’s hobby was woodworking, and he was an artist at his craft. He filled his home with fine furniture that he designed and crafted, often using wood from trees that fell on his property.

In retirement, Dick traveled and enjoyed his friends and family, which included four grandchildren: Tucker and Cyrus of Portland, Oregon and Lily and Lucy of Louisville. Dick delighted in taking his family back to Cold Stream Pond each summer to enjoy the cottage, the lake, and lobsters.

Dick is survived by his wife Julie and three sons whom he considered his greatest achievement: T.R. of New Orleans, Clark (Diane Pecknold) of Louisville, and Ben (Robin) of Portland, Oregon.

The burial at Cave Hill Cemetery will be private. Highlands Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Visitation is Sunday, March 12, from 4pm -7pm at Clark and Diane’s home, 1252 Cherokee Road, Louisville, with arranged parking.
