Obituary for Charles Andrews Plank PhD

Charles Andrews Plank PhD
PLANK, Charles Andrews, 88, passed away on December 23, 2016.

Born in Charlotte, NC, Charles Plank studied at North Carolina State University, receiving the Ph.D. in 1957 at which time he began a long career as a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Speed Scientific School of the University of Louisville. A member of the teaching faculty there until his retirement in 1993, he was a leader in faculty government and a recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award.

He was a lifetime lover and supporter of music, and a passionate collector of jazz recordings—especially the music of Duke Ellington—and a long-time host of the radio show, “Time Out for Jazz” on WUOL, whose programs drew on the riches and pleasures of his personal collection. He was also an ardent supporter of University of Louisville athletics and an official of the Kentuckiana Cinder Club. His interactions were often graced with a lively wit and a warm smile, endearing him to generations of friends.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Joyce Clayton Plank; three sons, Steven Plank (Katherine) of Oberlin, Ohio; Karl Plank (Kathleen) of Cornelius, North Carolina; Mark Plank (Michelle) of Whitestone, New York; a niece, Jennie Lou Pangle of Virginia Beach, Virginia; four grandchildren (Erika Plank Hagan, Aidan Plank, Hannah Plank, and Lena Plank); and two great-grandchildren (Isaac Hagan and Kai Hagan). Visitation will be on Thursday, December 29 from 3:00 to 7:00 at the Highlands Funeral Home (3331 Taylorsville Rd.); a memorial service will be held at Strathmoor Presbyterian Church on Friday, December 30 at 11:00 (2201 Hawthorne Ave).

Memorial contributions may be sent to the charity of your choice.
