Obituary for Annette Craig

Annette Craig
Craig, Annette Bryce, 93, of Louisville, Kentucky, much loved mother and grandmother, departed this world on Friday, November 18, 2016, at the lovely Gardiner Home, Hospice of the Valley, in Phoenix, Arizona, where she was surrounded by loving family and compassionate staff.

Annette was born in Kalamunda, Western Australia (WA), on August 31, 1923, and grew up in Perth, WA. She attended business college in Perth, which prepared her for her future career as an Administrative Secretary. During WWII, she served in the Australian Army Medical Women’s Service. It was during this time that she met her future husband, John William Craig, who was stationed near Perth, WA. They met for the first time at a Red Cross dance for American servicemen. They saw each other across a crowded room, and their love for each other was ignited. Annette and Johnny were married in Melbourne, Australia, on June 10, 1944. Annette came to the USA to join her beloved husband in Louisville at the conclusion of the war. In her career, Annette was an Administrative Secretary for the KY Mental Health Manpower Commission, and later, at the Mall of St. Matthews. She was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, where she was a choir member, and belonged to the Women’s Circle. Her Australian heritage was very important to her, and she passed this love on to her daughters and grandchildren, who were enthralled by her many stories about growing up in Perth, WA. In addition to her heritage and her family, Annette greatly enjoyed her nice hot cup of tea (and it better be hot!), attending the ballet and musicals by Rodgers and Hammerstein.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Craig; maternal grandmother, Emily Mouritz; father, Felix Bryce; mother, Hazel Lyons; step-father, Charles Lyons; half-sister, Jill Isherwood; step-brothers, Gordon and Cyril Lyons; and her in-laws, James F. Craig, Sr. and Edith Jenkins Craig. She shared a home with her mother and grandmother at 39 Richmond Street in Perth, WA, for many years.
Annette is survived by her daughters, Susan L. Jones (Grant) of TX, and Karen J. Strobel Long (Paul) of AZ; 6 grandchildren, Craig Gerhard (Kim Saltzman), Julia Ellis (Martin), Kristen Gerhard, Drew Gerhard, Brittany “Rae” Strobel (Adam Barr), and Joseph Strobel (Lindsay); 2 step-granddaughters, Margie Roberts (Justin) and Judy Parks (Brandt); 7 great-grandchildren. Two of her great-grandchildren live in Perth, WA, with their "Mum," Julia; a sister-in-law Evelyn Peace; step-sister, Jessie Gibbs; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in Australia and the U.S.

Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 28, 2016, at Highlands, with entombment to follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
