Obituary for John N. ""Jack"" Uhl Jr.

John N. ""Jack"" Uhl Jr.
John N Uhl Jr “Jack”, 86, born June 5, 1929 left this world on May 23, 2015. He was a true gentleman who lived his faith in service to his family and others.
He was born in New Albany, Indiana to John and Dorothy Uhl. He rode the interurban across the river to attend St. Xavier High School where he was the captain of the 1947 state champion swim team. He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Electrical Engineering, and then served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War.
He met the love of his life Joan Craven through a blind date, and they married January 8, 1955. He worked at Standard Gravure Corporation from 1955-1991, and served as the VP of Production. He and Joan raised their three children at Holy Spirit where they were active members, and he later served on the Advisory Board for Trinity High School. He was a skilled craftsman who could fix anything from cars to houses, and was known for his masterful renovation projects of their Hurstbourne home.
After retirement, he and Joan were active members of the Cathedral of the Assumption where he helped with the restoration of the building and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. He and Joan’s favorite travel spots were Japan, Lake Tahoe and Sante Fe. Relaxation meant having a beer and bowl of popcorn while watching U of L basketball or a golf tournament. On special occasions, a glass of Chivas Regal scotch would do.
Known for his patience in all things, he journeyed through life as a quiet man who put others before himself. He was a trusted advisor known for his longstanding care of family and friends. Most of all, he adored his wife Joan, and loved his children and grandchildren. His little dog Lucy was his constant companion.
He was predeceased by his wife, Joan; parents, Dorothy and John N. Uhl Sr. and his younger sister, Doris Jean Chase.
His children Melissa Draut (Ken), John N. Uhl III “Nick” (Lisa Santos) and Stephanie Pfeifer (Tom) cherish his memory and example. His grandchildren Sam Draut, Emily Pfeifer and Michele Pfeifer fondly remember him as Daddy Jack.
Visitation will 4-8 p.m. Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Cathedral of the Assumption, 433. S. 5th St.
Expressions of sympathy can be made to the Cathedral of the Assumption or Hosparus of Louisville. Special thanks to Magnolia Springs, Hosparus and Home Watch caregivers.
